Mokpo is a South Korean port city in Jeollanam-do Province , in the extreme southwest of the country at the mouth of the Yeongsan into the Yellow Sea .
Mokpo borders Muan County to the north and east, Yeongam County to the south and Sinan County , which consists of the offshore archipelagos, to the west and northwest .
Under pressure from Japan , the port was opened to trade in 1897. During this time, Mokpo became an important commercial and industrial city.
From 1910 to 1945, when Korea was incorporated into the Japanese Empire , the city was called Mokupo after the Japanese pronunciation of the city name 木浦 .
Since Gwangju was spun off from Jeollanam-do Province, until a few years ago, it was also the most populous city. The construction of the new provincial capital in Muan County is taking place right on the border with Mokpo.
Today Mokpo is an important shipyard location for Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries . The South Korean Navy maintains the headquarters of its third fleet in the city .
