Masan was a South Korean port city on the Sea of Japan and a traffic junction about 35 km west of Busan and the administrative seat of Gyeongsangnam-do Province .
The city is located on Masan Bay (마산 만, Masan-man). During the Mongolian occupation, the city was known as Happo (合浦), which is why the old, still regularly used name of the bay is Happo-man .
Under pressure from Japan , the port was opened to international trade on May 1, 1899. Among other things, fish , salt and cotton are important export goods, the industrial operations include fish and soy factories, electrical industry, metal processing industry, cotton weaving mills and companies in the chemical industry.
On July 1, 2010, Masan was incorporated into the neighboring city of Changwon .
