Lianyungang ( Chinese 連雲港 市 / 连云港 市 , Pinyin Liányúngǎng shì ) is a district-free city in the northeast of the Chinese province of Jiangsu . It is located on the Yellow Sea . The administrative area of Lianyungang has an area of 7446 km² and approx. 4,496,400 inhabitants (end of 2016). 897,393 people live in the actual urban settlement area of Lianyungang (2010 census).

economy
Lianyungang's economy is geared towards processing the larger phosphate and ore deposits near the city. It was one of the first 14 cities to open its port to world trade. This ensured enormous economic growth and also attracted numerous tourists.
Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant is 30 km east of Lianyungang . Two nuclear reactors are in operation, two (as of 2012) are under construction. The Fukushima nuclear disaster (March 2011) made the population aware that nuclear power plants directly on the coast are threatened by tsunamis.

During the Tang Dynasty , Lianyungang was the starting point of a trade line that linked China with other countries in Southeast Asia.
The city is the eastern end of the Longhai – Lanzhou railway line and is located on the Qingdao – Yancheng railway line, which opened on December 26, 2018 .
