Wuxi ( Chinese  無錫 市  /  无锡 市 , Pinyin Wúxī Shì  - “city without tin”) is a Chinese district-free city . Wuxi is located in Jiangsu Province , between the Yangtze River and the Tai Hu Lake . The administrative area of ​​the city of Wuxi has an area of ​​4787.61 km² and at the end of 2017 had about 6.55 million inhabitants. According to the 2010 Census, the population is 6,372,624 and has thus increased by almost 2 million in about 6 years. According to the statistical office of the city of Wuxi, 3.66 million people live in the actual urban settlement area of ​​Wuxi (as of 2018).

Administrative structure

At the district level, Wuxi consists of five urban districts and two independent cities. These are:

history

Wuxi has a 3000 year old city history. The city was founded towards the end of the Shang Dynasty . Taibo, the eldest son of Emperor Zhouwu , established the city and Wuxi became a cultural center of the Wu state . During the Zhou Dynasty and Qin Dynasty it became a center of tin mining , from which the city name Youxi ( 有 錫  /  有 锡  - "has tin") resulted. When the tin deposits were exhausted, the city was renamed Wuxi ( 無錫  /  无锡  - "has no tin").

Economy and Transport

Due to its booming economic development, Wuxi is often referred to as "Little Shanghai ". Wuxi is one of the east Chinese economic centers, it is the second most important city in Jiangsu Province after Nanjing and was the first city in this province with an industrial park for foreign investors. According to a ranking by the Forbes business magazine in 2008, Wuxi is one of the most attractive Chinese business locations. It was ranked 3rd on the list of Best Business Cities in Mainland China . According to a study from 2014, Wuxi had a gross domestic product of US $ 211.46 billion in purchasing power parity . In the ranking of the economically strongest metropolitan regions worldwide, the city took 50th place. The GDP per capita is $ 44,760 (PPP). Wuxi is one of the richest cities in all of China.

The traditional industrial branch of textile processing is of great importance, but is increasingly being displaced by companies in the electrical, mechanical engineering and automotive industries as well as high technology . The National Supercomputing Center is located in Wuxi with the world's most powerful supercomputer at the time of 2016. Wuxi is a center of Chinese solar technology . Wuxi International Airport has existed since October 2007, and was built on a former military airfield. In addition to regional flights, there are also flight connections to other Asian countries.

Local public transport is mainly carried by suburban railways and city buses. A subway has been under construction since 2008. When it is planned for completion in 2015, the network will consist of three lines and a total length of 56.11 km. "Line 1" was opened in July 2014.
