Map of Kanagawa constituencies for the House of Representatives

Since April 1, 2010, Sagamihara has been a "major city by government decree" ( seirei shitei toshi ) and is divided into the three districts ( Ku ) Midori , Chūō ("center") and Minami ("south").

The Mayor of Sagamihara has been Kentarō Motomura since the 2019 regional elections . The former Member of the House of Commons ( LPDPDFPKibō → non-party) prevailed against incumbent Toshio Kayama and two other candidates.

The city council regularly has 46 members (Midori-ku: 11, Chūō-ku: 17, Minami-ku: 18). He is also still elected in the uniform regional elections. In the 2019 election, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) emerged as the strongest force with 15 seats.

In the 105-member prefectural parliament, also elected in the 2019 unified elections, the city represents a total of eight members (Chūō and Minami: three each, Midori: two). In Chūō-ku there were only three candidates in 2019 and therefore no vote. A Liberal Democrat, a DVP MP from Midori and Minami, a Constitutional Democrat from Chūō and Minami and a Kōmeitō MP from Chūō were elected in each of the three constituencies .

For the House of Representatives , the northeastern part of Sagamihara, which is larger in terms of population, forms the 14th constituency of Kanagawa, which re-elected the Liberal Democrat Jirō Akama in 2017 . The western part of Sagamihara (part of Midori-ku), which stretches far into the mountains along the prefectural border with Tokyo up to the border with Yamanashi, forms together with southern neighboring communities and part of Minami-ku in the south the 16th constituency, which in 2017 became the Liberal Democrat Hiroyuki Yoshiie won against incumbent Yūichi Gotō ( Kibō ).
