Odawara ( Japanese 小田原 市 , -shi ) is a city in Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan .
history
Odawaras strategic location on the old highway Tōkaidō between the mountainous Hakone and the mouth of Sakawa in the Sagami Bay played a key role in Japanese history. Before the Edo period , Odawara Castle was the main castle of the Later Hōjō (also Odawara-Hōjō ). During the Edo period, the castle controlled the Tōkaidō between the headquarters of the Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo and the stations west of Hakone, such as Sumpu ( Shizuoka ), Hamamatsu and Nagoya .
On December 31, 1703, the city was badly damaged by an earthquake.
Today a replica of the castle stands high on a hill above the city.
Odawara received city rights after mergers on December 20, 1940.
Odawara was the last city in Japan to be bombed during World War II (August 15, 1945).

Enoura, a coastal district in Odawara, is known for its pristine sea and the abundance of kumamomi , a species of fish that prefers clear and clean water. Sea turtles can also be found. It is popular with divers because of its clear waters and abundant marine life.
