history

On December 11, 1889, the station was opened by the Kyūshū Tetsudō ( 九州 鉄 道 , literally: "Kyūshū Railway"). The station is called Hakata, although it is the main train station in Fukuoka City. The naming was decided in 1889 when the cities of Fukuoka and Hakata were merged. To compensate, the city's international airport was named after Fukuoka.
