The San'yō Shinkansen ( Japanese 山陽 新 幹線 ) is a 553.7 km long high-speed line of the Japanese Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata of the JR West railway company . The name San'yō comes from the sub-region of the same name in Chūgoku , through which a large part of the route leads.
There are intermediate stops at Okayama , Hiroshima and Kokura , among others . The 161 km long section between Shin-Osaka and Okayama was opened in March 1972; 215 trains per day used the new route. There were four Hikari trains per hour , with a few stops in between, and four Kodama trains with stops at all subway stations. There are also Nozomi trains , which connect Tokyo and Hakata without changing trains, which allows a journey time of 5 hours.
In March 1975 followed the 393 km long section between Okayama and Hakata; the train occupancy of the entire route was 235 trains per day.
At the end of the 1980s, 200 trains ran daily on the route, with a top speed of 230 km / h. In March 1989 the number of trains was increased to 250 per day.
An extension of this line from Hakata to Kagoshima via the Kyūshū-Shinkansen route has been in operation since March 2011.
