Okayama ( Japanese 岡山 市 , - shi ) is the seat of the prefecture administration of Okayama prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan . The port city is located at the mouth of the Asahi River in the Seto Inland Sea .

history

Okyama is an old castle town , whose Okayama Castle dates back to the 14th century. From 1603 to 1868 the daimyō of a branch of the Ikeda clan resided here, who were among the greats of the Edo period . The castle, which was destroyed in the Pacific War , was rebuilt in concrete.

The city of Okayama was founded from several parishes on June 1, 1889 and soon began to develop into an industrial center. During the Second World War , 63% of it was destroyed by incendiary bombs by 138 B-29 “Superfortress” long-range bombers on the night of June 28-29, 1945 . The Okayama University was founded in 1949 founded.

The city council of Okayama ( Okayama-shigikai ) was reduced to 46 members in 2015 . In the uniform regional elections in April 2019 , 13 non-party members were elected, LDP candidates won 17 seats, the Kōmeitō eight, the KPJ five, the KDP two and the DVP one.

For the 55-member prefectural parliament of Okayama, the city of Okayama extends into four constituencies, which together elect 19 members; a constituency also includes the district of Kaga with the city of Kibi-Chūō. Nine of the MPs from the four constituencies belong to the LDP parliamentary group, four from the ex-democratic parliamentary group (as of May 16, 2019).

In elections to the national lower house , most of the city is in constituencies 1 and 2 of the prefecture. In the 2017 election , the liberal democratic incumbents Ichirō Aisawa (since 1996) and Takashi Yamashita (since 2012) were confirmed. The former city of Seto , which was incorporated into the eastern district in 2007, belongs to the constituency of Okayama 3, which includes the northeast of the prefecture. He has been represented by Toshiko Abe since 2017 , who narrowly prevailed against Takeo Hiranuma's son Shōjirō in a race among two conservative candidates without a formal party nomination, but with an LDP election recommendation for Abe .
