The Okayama University ( jap. 岡山大学 , Okayama daigaku ; Engl. Okayama University ) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is in Tsushima-naka, Kita-ku , Okayama in Okayama Prefecture .

history

The origin of the university was the medical school ( 医学 館 , Igakkan ), which was founded by the Okayama- Han in 1870. In 1880 it became the Okayama Prefectural Medical School. In 1888 she became the medical faculty of the state Third Upper Middle School ( 第三 高等 中 学校 医学 部 , Dai-san kōtō chūgakkō igakubu ). In 1901 it developed into the Okayama Medical School ( 岡山 医学 専 門 学校 ), then in 1922 the Okayama Medical School ( 岡山 医科大学 , Okayama ika daigaku ).

Okayama University was founded in 1949 through the merger of the five Okayama schools. The five were: Okayama Medical School, Sixth High School ( 第六 高等学校 , Dai-roku kōtō gakkō , founded in 1900), Okayama Normal School ( 岡山 師範学校 , Okayama shihan gakkō , founded 1874), Okayama Normal School ( 岡山 青年 師範学校 , Okayama his shihan gakkō , founded in 1922) and the Okayama School of Agriculture ( 岡山 農業 専 門 学校 , Okayama nōgyō semmon gakkō , founded 1946).

The new Tsushima campus was a former military base of the Imperial Japanese Army . The base was occupied by the British Commonwealth of Nations army until 1947. After the army left, the sixth high school students lived in the barracks , as the school lost its school buildings in the Pacific War . Eventually the high school received the former base as a campus.
