Bowenia is a genus of cycads (Cycadales). The only two species occur only in the Australian state of Queensland . That is why the common German name Queensland sago palmfern is rarelyused.
Description and ecology
Vegetative characteristics
The shoot axes are underground and form beet- or potato-shaped tubers. From these trunks or necks rise, the tips of which first form cataphylls , then leaves or cones .
The leaves are bipinnate. In cycads , this only occurs in Cycas multipinnata and Cycas debaoensis , all other species have pinnate leaves.
Generative characteristics
The female cones are about the size of a fist, spherical. There is only one cone per growth point. However, a plant can have multiple growth points. The pollination has to insects take place because the pins are hidden under the ground foliage. Ripe seeds are white to blue, and also turn brown. It is likely to spread via rodents or other mammals.
The male cones also stand individually at growth points, initially upright, then at an angle. The male cones are white to cream-colored and cylindrical with a length of about 7.5 centimeters and a diameter of about 2.5 centimeters. They are short-lived and rot quickly after the pollen is scattered.
The number of chromosomes for both species is 2n = 18.
Occurrence
The genus Bowenia is endemic to the Australian state of Queensland . It occurs mainly in the coastal plains, with some populations also on the Atherton Tablelands . They grow in the rainforest or on its edges at altitudes from sea level up to 600 meters.
Systematics
The genus Bowenia was first described by William Jackson Hooker in 1863 . The generic name Bowenia honors George Ferguson Bowen (1821–1899), the first governor of Queensland . Bowenia is next Stangeria the second genus of the family Stangeriaceae .
Only two species belong to the genus Bowenia :
- Fine-toothed Queensland Palm Fern ( Bowenia serrulata (W.Bull) Chamb. ): This endemic species occurs in northern and northeastern Queensland.
- Magnificent Queensland Palm Fern ( Bowenia spectabilis Hook. Ex Hook. F. ): This endemic occurs in Queensland in the Cook and North Kennedy districts.
