history

The Igreja Matriz de Alvaiázere church

The place goes back to a Bronze Age settlement of the Castro culture . The Romans , who arrived from the 2nd century on , settled in the settlement, as evidenced by finds such as coins or everyday objects. In the course of their conquest in 711 , the Moors took the place that owes its current name to this time. It probably goes back to the Arabic al-bai-zir ("aromatic plants") and probably got its current form via Alva-Varze and Alva Várzea . Other theories see the Arabic al-Baiaz ("the falconer ") as the origin of the place name.

King D.Sancho II repopulated the place, which was destroyed in the course of the Reconquista , and gave it first city rights in 1200 . In 1385 Alvaiázere was elevated to a vila (small town with administrative rights) by King D. João I and has since been the seat of its own district. In 1514 King D. Manuel I renewed the town charter .

On September 29, 2013, the municipality of Maçãs de Caminho was incorporated into Alvaiázere.
