Queen D. Leonor is said to have bathed in the foul-smelling warm medicinal springs on the advice of the local population, coming from Óbidos in 1484 . From then on, convinced of the healing powers of the water, she sold personal jewelry and some land to build a hospital here in 1503 . Today's place, which owes its name to the history of its origins, was built around it. (Caldas da Rainha, port. For: thermal baths of the queen). The royal family used the thermal baths very often after that, and the place took off. In 1511 King D. Manuel I elevated Caldas da Rainha to ( Vila ) (small town with administrative rights).

In 1821 the place became the seat of an independent district. In the further course of the 19th century the thermal springs became an increasingly popular destination for the prosperous middle-class families. In addition, the local clay deposits favored the settlement of ceramic factories. The creations by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro in the Fábrica de Faianças das Caldas da Rainha between 1884 and 1907 should be mentioned in particular . With the increasing settlement of industrial companies, the number of inhabitants also grew. Caldas da Rainha was elevated to a city ( Cidade ) in 1927 .
