Centro de Alto Rendimento
Centro de Alto Rendimento ( CAR , roughly: high-performance center) are training centers for top-class sport in Portugal . They are roughly comparable to the German federal training centers .
CARs have been set up in Portugal since the early 2000s.
Objective and sponsorship
The CARs are intended to offer top athletes and national teams optimal training opportunities and personal development opportunities in their respective sport in order to improve the performance of athletes in the country. You also take on tasks that are assigned to the Olympic bases in Germany , for example .
The CARs are set up by the municipal district administrations ( concelhos ), in consultation and with the participation of the national sports associations that subsequently operate or co-operate the CARs, with significant financial participation from the public sports foundation Fundação do Desporto . This receives the corresponding grants from the state sports institute Instituto do Desporto e Juventude . In addition, the municipalities and sports associations are also involved in the financing.
The basic requirement for the establishment and recognition of a CAR is on the one hand compliance with the current requirements of the international and national sports associations with regard to sporting, technical and sanitary infrastructure, including sports science, psychological, nutritional and therapeutic standards. On the other hand, the facilities must be used on a daily basis and also serve other types of sport and popular sports in general.
Public funding and thus the establishment of CARs aims to promote Olympic and Paralympic sports in particular.
