The Federação de Triatlo de Portugal (FTP port. For: Triathlon Federation of Portugal) is the governing body for triathlon (port .: Triatlo) in Portugal . The FTP is based in the municipality of Caxias , in the Oeiras district near Lisbon .
After the modern triathlon was reinvented in the USA in the mid-1970s, the sport found its way to Europe in the early 1980s. In 1981 the first official competitions on the continent took place in the Netherlands . In 1984 triathlon competitions took place in Portugal for the first time, in the seaside resort of Peniche . In the same year the European triathlon umbrella organization European Triathlon Union was founded .
With the Associação Portuguesa de Triatlo (APT, German: Portuguese Triathlon Association), the first triathlon association was established in Portugal in 1987. In 1989 the International Triathlon Union was founded in Avignon , and in the same year the ATP was transferred to the newly founded Federação de Triatlo de Portugal (FTP) as a direct successor.
With the Delegados Regionais , the FTP maintains a regional association structure, which is, however, only being set up. Due to the now financially limited scope of the association as a result of the euro crisis and the various public austerity measures, the plans have so far only been partially implemented. So far there is a regional sub-organization, the Delegação Regional Norte for Northern Portugal. The planned delegations Delegação Regional Centro (Central Portugal) and Delegação Regional Sul (South Portugal) have so far been temporarily supervised by the FTP, as has the Autonomous Region of Azores , where there has not yet been any regional triathlon structure. The delegation of the Autonomous Region of Madeira is led by the local triathlon association Associação Regional da Madeira with the support of FTP.
