Golf course in the Algarve

One of the most important golf tournaments in Portugal has been the Portugal Masters since 2007 , with prize money of two to three million euros, one of the more coveted tournaments on the PGA European Tour .

The association's training center, the Centro Nacional de Formação do Jamor (also Dring Range do Jamor , near the Estádio Nacional in Jamor), established in 1987, corresponds to the official performance centers of Portuguese sports associations, the Centros de Alto Rendimento (CAR).

Portugal has a large number of golf courses , in particular those in the Algarve and on the Azores and Madeira archipelagos . In 2014, twelve golf courses in Portugal were recertified by the United States Golf Association .

history

The first official golf club in Portugal was founded in Espinho in 1890 with the Oporto Niblicks Club (since 1900 Oporto Golf Club ). With the Lisbon Sports Club (1922), the Club de Golf de Miramar (1932) and the Club de Golf do Estoril (1945), further important golf clubs emerged in Portugal.

Ricardo Santos (won the Madeira Islands Open (European Tour) in 2012 and was awarded the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year )

In 1949, today's national golf association was founded with the Federação Portuguesa de Golfe (FPG).

The FPG moved into its first association-owned facilities in 1999 in Miraflores.

In 2009 the European Tour invited the FPG to apply for the Ryder Cup 2018, but in the end it was France.

Members and finances

In 2014 the association had 14,094 registered members in its 146 member associations. Spatially, with 4,788 players were registered in the Faro district (Algarve), followed by the Lisbon district (3,731), Porto district (1,312), Setúbal district (948) and the Leiria district (683). Very few players are registered in the Guarda district, with just 14 members in registered clubs of the association.

FPG closed the 2014 financial year with a positive balance of € 14,695.43, after € 26,905.79 in the previous year. The income totaling € 1,710,456.26 was offset by expenses totaling € 1,695,760.83. Most of the income comes from association activities (approx. 1.2 million), public grants made up € 458,896.34.

Thus the situation of the association is financially relatively relaxed. With its balance sheet, the FPG stands in contrast to the generally difficult situation of most Portuguese sports associations, which are striving for increasing income and increased cost control with falling public subsidies, in a persistently difficult economic environment. The reason is the government's rigid austerity policy and the tense overall economic situation in Portugal as a result of the euro crisis .
