The Federação Portuguesa de Andebol (FPA port. For the Portuguese Handball Federation) is the governing body for handball in Portugal . The FPA is based in Lisbon . She co-organized the 1994 European handball championship and the 2003 men's handball world championship in Portugal.

history

After the German-born Armando Tschopp published the handball rules in the Portuguese sports newspaper Sports in November 1929 , handball became known to a wider public in Portugal. The first official handball game took place on January 31, 1931 in Porto. The first handball association was founded in Lisbon in 1931, followed by the Porto Association in 1932. In 1932 championships were played for the first time in Lisbon and Porto, and in 1934 a selection from Porto took place against a Lisbon selection for the first time. Up to this point handball was only played as field handball , in Portugal it was also called 11-handball because of its team strength.

The FPA was founded in 1939 on the initiative of the handball associations of Porto, Lisbon and Coimbra. In 1946 she was a founding member of the International Handball Federation . Between 1938 and 1975 the field handball championship was held. From 1949, the current form of handball was increasingly played with a seven-person team in Portugal. As a result, field handball was practiced less and less and is now history in Portugal as well as internationally.

Today tens of thousands of people play handball in continental Portugal, Madeira and the Azores . In Portugal, handball is the most practiced sport by women.

Portugal with the FPA hosted the 1994 European handball championship . Their own selection finished the tournament without any points, but the popularity continued to grow slowly. In 2003 the FPA co-organized the men's handball world championship in Portugal. The Portuguese men's national handball team came in 12th in the end.

The FPA then recorded a slight increase in interest in handball in the country. The national team has so far not had any major successes. However, Portuguese clubs reached the final in the EHF Challenge Cup several times , which Sporting Lisbon won in 2010.
