The 1st men's handball European championship was held from June 3rd to June 12th 1994 in Portugal . Twelve teams were qualified for the final round. Sweden won the tournament by beating Russia 34:21 in the final. Third place went to the Croatian team , who won the game for third place against Denmark with 24:23. The German team finished ninth, Austria and Switzerland could not qualify for the finals.
