Career

Kljaić came to handball relatively late and began his career at RK Medveščak Zagreb . There he was discovered by Vlado Stenzel . The defense specialist has played five international matches for Yugoslavia . After his active career, Kljaić became a handball coach. Until his death after a long illness, he worked as an expert on Croatian radio and television.

In Germany he was the coach of TuSpo Nürnberg from 1984 to 1988 . With the team he rose from the second division to the first division . Then Kljaić moved to SG Wallau / Massenheim , which he coached from 1988 to 1992. With this team he became German champion and German cup winner in 1992 . In recognition of these successes, he was named " Handball coach of the year " in the same year . At the end of the season Kljaić went to league rivals TV Großwallstadt , where he stayed until 1994. This was followed by two years as a trainer for TUSEM Essen , until he trained again with SG Wallau / Massenheim from 1996 to 1998. At the same time he was the coach of the Croatian national team . With the selection of Croatia, he became Olympic champion in Atlanta in 1996 . He then went back to Croatia for Badel Zagreb for a few years . With this team Kljaić won twice the Croatian championship and the cup, and twice reached the final in the Champions League, which was lost to FC Barcelona . Then Kljaić was coach of the national teams of Egypt and Kuwait . In 2004 he came back to the Bundesliga and trained GWD Minden -Hannover. The team he was able to secure relegation, but after only one season Kljaić moved to the 2005/2006 season for VfL Gummersbach . After one season he gave up the coaching post in Gummersbach for “family and health reasons”.
