Alfreð Gíslason ( [ˈalfrɛð ˈgislasɔn] ; born September 7, 1959 in Akureyri , Iceland ) is an Icelandic handball coach . He was a long-time coach at THW Kiel and is the coach of the German national team .
career
As an active player (back left), the historian and father of three Alfreð scored 542 goals in 190 international matches for Iceland and won the German championship twice with TUSEM Essen .
His first coaching station was the Icelandic club KA Akureyri (1991-1997). His first coaching station in Germany was with SG VfL / BHW Hameln for the 1997/98 season in the 1st handball league . This season he rose as table-15. with the club and failed in the 1998/99 season in the promotion relegation at TV Willstätt . Then Alfreð Gíslason was dismissed and replaced by his assistant coach Frank-Michael Wahl . He had already announced his move to SC Magdeburg during the season . From July 1, 1999 to January 5, 2006 Alfreð was under contract as a coach at SC Magdeburg. In 2001 he was named Trainer of the Year.
His successor was his then assistant coach Gheorghe Licu until the end of the 2005/06 season . Alfreð had the German champions VfL Gummersbach already a coaching job from 1 July 2007, this occurred, however, already for the beginning of the season 2006/07, after his predecessor Velimir Kljaić was assigned for health and family reasons. In addition, Alfreð Gíslason coached the Icelandic national team until after the European Championship in 2008 , when Iceland was eliminated in the main round. Before the 2008/09 season he was bought out of his contract with VfL by THW Kiel . He was the first coach to win the Champions League with two different clubs: 2002 with SC Magdeburg, 2010 and 2012 with THW Kiel. After the 2018/19 season he gave up his coaching position at THW Kiel.
On February 6, 2020, the German Handball Federation (DHB) announced that Alfreð Gíslason will be the national coach of the German national team from March . Previously, Christian Prokop been dismissed by the DHB.
