Qualification: The qualification was held as part of several Final Four tournaments: Four groups of four teams. The best team qualified for each group. The outgoing twelve teams moved into the EHF Cup .

Group stage: There were four groups with six teams each. In a group everyone played a game against each other; the four best in the group reached the last sixteen. The outgoing teams did not move into the EHF European Cup Winners' Cup .

Round of 16: The round of 16 was played in the knockout system with a return leg. The winner of each game went to the quarter-finals.

Quarterfinals: The quarterfinals were played in the knockout system with a return leg. The winner of each game advanced to the semi-finals.

Final Four: For the third time there was a Final Four tournament, the semi-finals and the final took place on May 26th and 27th, 2012 in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. The semi-finals were played in the knockout system. The winners of each game moved on to the final. The losers of each game moved into the game for third place. Only one game was played per semi-final. The final and the game for third place were also played in simple mode.

qualification

The draw for the qualification took place on June 27, 2011 in Vienna.
20 teams took part that had previously qualified for the competition.

Qualified teams

Each of the three teams in a pot was divided into a group of one to three. Two teams from one pot never came into one group. The clubs RK Brskovo Mojkovac from Montenegro and AS Conversano from Italy were eligible to participate, but did not register for the Champions League, which meant that the qualification had to be changed and it now only consists of three instead of four groups. As a result, the Polish club Wisła Płock was put directly from qualification into the group stage. The ZTR Zaporizhia club from Ukraine could no longer take part in the Champions League. Group W was made up of teams that the EHF believed should raise the level of the Champions League. Five clubs had registered for the wildcard tournament. On 17./18. June it was decided that the Danish club Skjern Håndbold could not participate in this tournament.
