Iker Romero Fernández (born June 15, 1980 in Vitoria-Gasteiz / Spain ) is a former Spanish handball player . He is 1.96 m tall and weighs 100 kg.

Romero, who last played for the German club Füchse Berlin and appeared for the Spanish national team, was used in a variety of ways in the backcourt . Mostly he played on the back center .

Career

In 1997 Iker Romero signed with his first professional team, BM Valladolid . In 2000 he moved to Ademar León for one season , with whom he won the Spanish championship in 2001. In the same year he moved to BM Ciudad Real . Here he won the Copa del Rey de Balonmano in 2003 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 2002 and 2003 . In 2003 he signed with FC Barcelona . With the Catalans he won the Spanish championship in 2006 and 2011, the Copa del Rey de Balonmano in 2004, the Spanish Supercup in 2004 and 2007 , the European Supercup in 2004 and the EHF Champions League in 2005 and 2011 .

Romero switched to the HBL-Bundesliga for the Füchsen Berlin in the 2011/12 season , with whom he won the DHB Cup in 2014 and the EHF Europe Cup in 2015 . After he announced in April 2014 that he would end his career at the end of the season and return to his homeland, he revised this decision in May 2014 and extended his contract in Berlin until 2015. He then ended his career.

Iker Romero had played exactly 200 international matches for the Spanish national team until June 5, 2014 , scoring 753 goals. In 2005 he won the World Cup in Tunisia with Spain . He also won at the 2008 Olympics and the 2011 World Championship bronze , and at the 2006 European Championship silver .

Romero has been working as an assistant coach at the German Bundesliga club TSV Hannover-Burgdorf since the 2017/18 season .
