The D & W The Motion Corporation GmbH & Co. KG , to 2009 D & W Auto, Sport + Accessories Handelsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG , is a German company for car accessories, car spare parts, car repairs, EU -Neuwagen and model vehicles based in Bochum .
history
D&W, named after the first letters of the first names of the company's founders Detlef Sokowicz and Werner Bauer , was founded on July 1, 1971 in Dortmund as a car accessories shop .
On April 1, 1978 the company moved to Bochum - Wattenscheid . In 1984 the establishment of additional franchise sales in the business premises of partner shops (“shop-in-shop chain”) was started and a year later a branch was founded in Frankfurt am Main . In 1990, the establishment of a network with D&W Centers began , and in 1992 the network with D&W Points .
The main business of D&W in Bochum was one of the locations of the 1991 feature film Manta, Manta . The Opel Manta , driven by Til Schweiger as Bertie in the film , was also tuned by D&W.
The branch in Bielefeld was opened in 1995, followed by two further branches in Kassel and Berlin . According to company information, around 230,000 products were offered in 2000.
On July 1, 1996, company founder Werner Bauer sold his company shares after 25 years. In 1998, the two additional tuning brands H & M Tuning GmbH & Co. KG and BetaTec GmbH were introduced into the group and in the 2000 financial year the company recorded an annual turnover of 80 million euros, which after 2001 with the Internet presence as D&W Car Design Company and through In addition, the spare parts portal D & W-Repair (together with Ottomobil ), the D&W Camping-Caravan Store and the EU new car brand discount D&W C @ rs increased to over 87 million euros.

On January 9th, 2009 it became known that D&W had to file for bankruptcy at the Bochum district court. As reasons for this downturn, in addition to the intensified competitive situation and the difficult market development due to the Internet, the financial crisis and the crisis in the automotive industry, which have already caused recessive damage in these areas of the international market, were named. The resulting widespread loss of purchasing power caused a real collapse in sales. As part of the examination of the insolvency application by the Bochum district court, lawyer Frank Imberger was appointed insolvency administrator . According to his plans, there was still the possibility of restructuring the company and thus preserving the 55 endangered jobs. On July 1, 2009, the operative business was transferred to the new company D&W The Motion Corporation GmbH & Co. KG and the insolvency proceedings were averted.
In 2011 D&W has branches in Bielefeld, Kassel and Berlin. There are also twelve D&W centers and 23 D&W points in Germany as well as agencies in Poland, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Austria. There are 200 outlets in 21 countries worldwide.
D&W catalog
The D&W catalog, which is also available in book and magazine stores (at the time selling price 14.00 DM) , had a circulation of around 700,000 in 1996. In 2009, 300,000 units were sold. In addition to the tuning items on offer, it contains numerous photographs of tuned vehicles in connection with erotically posing female photo models ( D&W girls , photographed by Jens Brüggemann among others) and is therefore particularly well known. For example, Daniela Katzenberger appeared as a D&W girl .
