Life

Peter Minich was born into a host family in the St. Pölten district of Harland and first attended the HTL in Mödling and trained as a technician in mechanical engineering. After 1945 he attended the Max Reinhardt Seminar and the Franz Schubert Conservatory in Vienna , while also studying singing. In 1948 he began his stage career as an actor in the Vienna cellar theater Das Experiment and received his first engagement at the Vienna Burgtheater in the same year . In December 1950 Minich made his first guest appearance (as an actor) at the Vienna Volksoper; he took on the small role of a lieutenant in the operetta Gasparone .

In 1951 he was employed at the Stadttheater St. Pölten , where he was discovered by chance as a singer by Marcel Prawy , as Minich stood in for a sick colleague in Boccaccio that day . Here he made his debut as a singer in Der Bettelstudent by Carl Millöcker . He also met his future wife, the operetta singer Eleonore Bauer , in St. Pölten. From 1951 to 1955 he was engaged at the Stadttheater St. Gallen and from 1955 to 1960 at the Graz Opera House . In 1960 he became a member of the Vienna Volksoper ensemble ; here his career reached its climax. His first premier role as a permanent member of the Vienna Volksoper was Count Tassilo in the operetta Gräfin Mariza in September 1960. Before that, he had appeared in leading roles at the Vienna Volksoper: 1956 as Petruchio in Kiss Me, Kate and 1957 as Eisenstein in the operetta Die Fledermaus .

At the Vienna Volksoper he first sang the classic tenor roles in the operettas by Carl Millöcker, Johann Strauss , Franz Lehár , Carl Zeller , Robert Stolz and Emmerich Kálmán . Minich's premiere roles at the Vienna Volksoper included: Symon in Der Bettelstudent (1960), Leutnant Niki in A Waltz Dream (1960; 1974), Danilo in The Merry Widow (1960; 1974), Paul Aubier in Der Opernball (1960; 1985) ), Achmed Bey in Die Rose von Stambul (1961), the title role in Boccaccio (1961), Caramello in One Night in Venice (1961), Mister X in Die Zirkusprinzessin (1962), Nanki-Puh in Der Mikado (1962), René in Madame Pompadour (1964), René in The Count of Luxembourg (1964), Edwin Ronald in Die Csárdásfürstin (1966), Adam in The Bird Trader (1966), Count Zedlau in Wiener Blut (1967), The Stranger in Venus in Silk (1970), Anton Hofer in Two Hearts in Three-Four Time (1975) and Leopold in Im Weisse Rößl (1976).

In 1964 he sang the role of Leutnant Gustl in the world premiere of Robert Stolz's operetta Spring Parade at the Vienna Volksoper ; his partner was Mimi Coertse . In 1973 Minich took over the role of Jim Mahoney in a new production at the Vienna Volksoper in Brecht / Weill's opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny ; this remained one of Minich's few operatic roles.

In 1962 and 1963 he took over the speaking role of Bassa Selim in Mozart's Singspiel Entführung aus dem Serail at the Salzburg Festival . He worked in several television productions and took on important roles in operetta adaptations, for example that of Adam in the television film The Bird Dealer at the side of Lucia Popp and Renate Holm in 1967 . He was a guest with the Volksoper ensemble in the USSR and from 1982 to 1983 in Japan .

From 1980, Peter Minich gradually switched to the character subject and worked on comics (Baron Gondremarck in Pariser Leben , premiere 1981 at the Vienna Volksoper; Colonel Ollendorf in Der Bettelstudent , premiere 1983 at the Vienna Volksoper; Podestà Nasoni in Gasparone , premiere 1988 at the Wiener Volksoper ; Triquet in Eugen Onegin , premiere 1990 at the Vienna Volksoper) and "age-wise" roles in the operettas Der fidele Bauer (as old farmer Matthäus Scheichelreuther, premiere September 1997 at the Vienna Volksoper) and Im Weisse Rößl (as old Emperor Franz Joseph I. ).

In 2005 Peter Minich was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease . In October 2006 he took on the role of the aged Emperor Altoum in the premiere of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot , his last role at the Vienna Volksoper. In the 2007/08 season KS Peter Minich could be heard again as Altoum in Turandot and at the opening concert in September 2007, in the musical soiree and in the Ralph Benatzky soiree in November / December 2007. As Altoum he was again on the stage of the Vienna Volksoper in the 2008/09 season. He had his last appearance in December 2009 as part of the Christmas concert of the Vienna Volksoper.

Even in old age, Minich performed in operettas outside the Vienna Volksoper, most recently in speaking roles. In 1998 he appeared at the Stadttheater Baden as Honoré Lachailles in the musical Gigi . He also performed at the Langenlois Castle Festival (2000; as Prince Ypsheim-Gindelbach in Wiener Blut ), at the Perchtoldsdorf Summer Games (2001; as "Donna" in Il campiello by Carlo Goldoni ) and at the Stadttheater Baden (2005; as Kaiser in the operetta Spring Parade by Robert Stolz). In 2008, alongside Guggi Löwinger , at the Berndorfer Festival under the direction of Felix Dvorak, he took on the role of pastor Cerny in Dvorak's Volksstück Kirchfeld ; this was Minich's last speaking role.
