Carl Adam Johann Nepomuk Zeller (born June 19, 1842 Sankt Peter in der Au , Lower Austria ; † August 17, 1898 in Weikersdorf near Baden near Vienna ) was an Austrian lawyer , ministerial advisor, head of the art department in the Ministry of Education and, as a composer, a representative of the golden Operetta era .

Life

Zeller was born the son of a doctor and attended elementary school in his birthplace. As a child he played several instruments. At the age of eleven he became a choirboy in the imperial court orchestra ( Vienna Boys Choir ). Carl Zeller completed the lower level of the Josefstädter Gymnasium in Vienna and then the upper level of the well-known Stiftsgymnasium Melk , where he graduated with honors. He then studied law in Vienna and at the same time composition with Simon Sechter in Vienna. After his doctorate as Dr. jur. In Graz, Zeller first worked at various courts. From the legal service he was appointed by Minister Stremayr in 1873 to the Ministry of Culture and Education, where he subsequently became head of the art department and rose to the ministerial council class.

On May 15, 1875, Carl Zeller married Anna Maria Schwetz, daughter of a Viennese master tailor. The marriage resulted in two sons.

Carl Zeller only composed part-time throughout his life, but his musical work is in line with the three grandmasters of classic Viennese operetta, Carl Millöcker , Franz von Suppè and Johann Strauss .

In total, Zeller composed six full-length stage works in almost 20 years, if one disregards his unpublished preparatory work and his own post-processing of his works. His earliest compositions are songs, male choirs and cyclical song games such as The Cologne Fools Festival (Vienna 1868). His indispensable librettist Moritz West worked on his first stage play, the comic opera Joconde (Vienna 1876) . In the 1880s, Zeller went over to operetta and immediately found acceptance with his works in the Neapolitan and Circassian milieu: Die Carbonari (Vienna 1880) and Der Vagabund (Vienna 1886).

The most successful operettas The Bird Dealer (epitome of the German-Austrian hometown operetta) and The Obersteiger are still played on numerous stages today. This resulted in songs like “Hello, everyone to each other”, “Like my Ahnl twenty years old”, “I'm the Christel from the Post”, “Do you give yourself roses in Tyrol” and “Don't be angry”. The operettas Der Kellermeister by Johann Brandl (1835–1913) and Die Rosl vom Wörthersee were later completed from his estate by his son Carl Wolfgang Zeller (* 1876, Vienna; † 1965, Baden near Vienna) in conjunction with Rudolf Kattnigg .

Carl Zeller spent his last years as a seriously ill man, perceived by the public through the embarrassing affair of an inheritance dispute and a related criminal case . On March 31, 1897, Zeller was sentenced to a year long imprisonment at the Higher Regional Court of Vienna for taking a false oath . (The prosecution itself had the consequence that Councilor Zeller resigned from his official position and was retired .) Since Zeller had been convicted in absentia due to illness, Zeller's wife (and not Zeller himself) lodged a nullity complaint. On June 18, 1897 conceded the Supreme Court judgment and dismissed the affair for a new hearing at the Vienna Circuit Court . - This negotiation never took place because Carl Zeller died of pneumonia on August 17, 1898 in Weikersdorf, Eugengasse 3 (which belonged to Baden near Vienna from 1912 onwards) at the age of only 56 years.

The funeral and funeral took place on August 19, 1898. Carl Zeller was given an honorary grave by the City of Vienna ( Wiener Zentralfriedhof , grave site 47B-G1-9).

Trivia

The ministry is said to have informed him in writing that “it would be natural that Mr. Zeller could not appear on the stage in view of his capacity as a civil servant.” Zeller therefore had to accept the applause from a box.
