Moritz West

Moritz West , actually Moritz Georg Nitzelberger (born August 6, 1840 in Vienna , † July 11, 1904 in Aigen im Mühlkreis , Upper Austria ) was an Austrian librettist .

Life

Moritz Nitzelberger was born in Vienna as the son of the court accountant Alois Nitzelberger. As a teenager, he wrote song texts for his schoolmate and college colleague Carl Zeller , with whom he was lifelong friend. As Moritz West, he later became the main librettist of the Mostviertel operetta composer. 1852 West studied at the University of Vienna Law and in 1862 graduated successfully Dr. jur. He then got a job as a secretary in the administration of the Union-Bank in Vienna . In 1874 he was appointed to the administrative board of the Moravian-Silesian Central Railway. In 1878 West resigned from all his offices and went on a long study trip to and through Italy. Upon his return, West settled back in his hometown as a librettist.

In his private life, Moritz Nitzelberger was a great book lover and collector. At last he owned a private library of approx. 1400 works with 3200 volumes, in which mainly German literature, history, travel, folk tales and proverbs, but also Austriaca and Viennensia were represented.

Shortly before the turn of the century, West moved to Aigen in the Mühlkreis and died there four weeks before his 64th birthday on July 11, 1904. He was buried at the romantic cemetery in Maria Enzersdorf .

Nitzelberger's first literary attempts date from the years of his studies. Early on, u. a. Franz Grillparzer and Eduard von Bauernfeld for his oeuvre and also supported him. Nitzelberger used his pseudonym Moritz West for almost all of his publications .
