Ignaz Schnitzer
Ignaz Schnitzer (born December 4, 1839 in Ratzersdorf (then Hungary , now a district of Bratislava , Slovakia); † June 18, 1921 in Vienna ; also Ignatz or Ignác Schnitzer) was an Austrian writer , journalist , translator, librettist and Hungarian newspaper founder Origin.
Life
Ignaz Schnitzer began studying philosophy in Pest , but soon worked as a journalist. From 1857 he lived in Vienna and wrote for various newspapers, such as the Pester Lloyd or the foreign paper , and as editor of the newspaper Der Progress . In 1867 he returned to Budapest and was initially a member of the editorial board of the Bécsi debate . In 1869 he founded the daily newspaper Neues Pester Journal together with Zsigmond Bródy (1840–1906) , which he headed as editor-in-chief for a decade.
In addition, he edited Hungarian plays for German theaters, in 1879 he translated Ede Zsigligeti's Rauschgold for the Vienna Burgtheater and Mór Jókai's hero Pálffy for the Carltheater .
After selling his stake in the New Pest Journal, he moved back to Vienna in 1881 and worked primarily as a librettist and translator. Schnitzer received special recognition for his translations and revisions of Sándor Petőfi's works into German. The friendship with Johann Strauss (son) prompted him to write the libretto for his gypsy baron and the cultural-historical and sometimes biographical work Colorful Stories from the Johann Strauss Period .
As co-owner of the Venice amusement park founded by Gabor Steiner in Vienna , he organized the financing and built new sights, such as the Ferris wheel . In 1894 he had the idea of commissioning a circular painting entitled “Emperor Franz Joseph and his time” to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. It was executed by the history painter Philipp Fleischer, and it was exhibited in Exhibition Street 143 in a round building specially designed by Oskar Marmorek .
Schnitzer was married to the daughter of a doctor, Gabriele, geb. Laszky (April 10, 1846 in Gyöngyös - September 28, 1913 in Vienna). His grave is in the Kerepeser Cemetery in Budapest.
