Life
Josef Hellmesberger was the son of the Austrian violinist and conductor Joseph Hellmesberger senior (1828–1893), who was also his first teacher. At the age of 15 he became a second violinist in his father's quartet ( Hellmesberger Quartet ), which he took over in 1887, and at the age of 18 he joined the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra as a violinist. As concertmaster (for the string line-up) and as a percussionist (for the wind line-up), he began military service in the band of the Austrian Infantry Regiment No. 4 in 1875 , was promoted to bandmaster that same year and in 1876 took over the management of the military music of the "32 ". He held this position until 1878. From 1878 he worked as solo violinist in the Vienna Court Music Orchestra and at the Court Opera (today the Vienna State Opera ). Also from 1878 he was professor for violin at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna (the predecessor of the Vienna Music Academy ). In 1890 he became the first court conductor of the Vienna court orchestra and also worked as a conductor at the Ringtheater, where he also witnessed the fire of the Ringtheater up close. As the successor to Gustav Mahler , he directed the Philharmonic Concerts from 1901 to 1903. In 1903 he resigned all functions in Vienna for private reasons and went to the Stuttgart court theater as Kapellmeister. He returned to Vienna a year later, fell ill soon after his return and died in 1907.
