Original Hoch- und Deutschmeister is the name of a traditional Austrian military band that makes music in Turkish .

history

Military band until 1918

The history of Austrian military music goes back to an order from Empress Maria Theresa from 1741, in which she decreed that each regiment should have its own band for troop parades . The band of the Hoch- und Deutschmeister Nr. 4 Infantry Regiment , which was stationed in Pavia at the time, had its first parade in Milan in 1741, the year it was founded, on the occasion of the birth of Joseph II.

Many military bands perished after, for reasons of economy, it was ordered that every regiment owner had to maintain his own band . The commander of the Deutschmeister Regiment, Count Anton Colloredo (Field Marshal Anton Count Colloredo-Melz and Wallsee, born November 14, 1707, † March 17, 1785 in Vienna), and his officers continued to support their chapel so that it was preserved.

The change from a military band to a traditional band began in 1781, when Emperor Joseph II stationed the Deutschmeister in Vienna. From then on it became the favorite band of the emperor and the people and was not only used for official occasions, such as the changing of the guard, but also gave public concerts in front of the Belvedere Palace and in Schönbrunn .

Early edition of sheet music for the Deutschmeister regimental march

The quality of the band is explained by the large number of well-known musicians in its ranks, some of whom also achieved fame as composers. The chapel included Joseph Hellmesberger , Josef Bayer , Dominik Ertl Edmund Eysler , Carl Michael Ziehrer , Alois Neidhart, Karl Mühlberger , Franz Wolfsecker, Wilhelm Wacek , Julius Herrmann , Bert Silving and Robert Stolz .

From 1885 to 1893 Carl Michael Ziehrer acted as Kapellmeister of the Hoch- and Deutschmeister. Successful concert tours led a civil high and German master band in historical uniform to the world exhibition in Chicago in 1893 under the direction of the regular German master band master Ziehrer, who had specially requested a vacation . During this time Alois Neidhart led the band as drum major and a certain grohmann as interim bandmaster. In the same year, the Deutschmeister regimental march was premiered by Wilhelm August Jurek , who, however, was never a musician with the band, but was an assistant in the company office. In the same year, Ziehrer's successor as Kapellmeister of the Hoch- and Deutschmeister was advertised again, in the course of which 31 applications were received, including from Franz Lehar . However, the position of Kapellmeister was given to Wilhelm Wacek , who had previously been the Stadtkapellmeister in Brixen from 1887 and remained Kapellmeister of the Deutschmeister until the end of the monarchy in 1918. From 1896 to 1901 Wilhelm Zit acted as a regiment drum . From around 1905 - i.e. in the early days of sound recordings - and in the following years, the German masters recorded numerous pieces of music under Wacek. In 1910, Emperor Franz Joseph sent the official band of Hoch- and Deutschmeister under Wilhelm Wacek on a concert tour to South America . This trip was financed by the metal industrialist Arthur Krupp , owner of the Berndorfer Metallwarenfabrik . Josef 'Pepi' Klugmayer acted as the last Austro-Hungarian regiment drum of the Hoch- und Deutschmeisterkapelle, which had to disarm in 1918.

Private organization after 1918

Kapellmeister Julius Herrmann - the tinny Furtwängler - in old age.

A few years after the end of the First World War , the traditional band of high and German masters was re-established as the official orchestra of the Deutschmeisterbund, the veteran association of high and German masters, on the initiative of the last conductor Wilhelm Wacek , because previously numerous false "German master music " with musicians, who were not German masters at all, who had misused the resounding name "Hoch- und Deutschmeister" in an immoral manner. Even a corpse bearer in the Vienna Central Cemetery called himself "Deutschmeisterkapellmeister". After Wacek's baton was handed over to Kapellmeister Julius Herrmann around 1931, who was later called the "Furtwängler of the Military Band" or "Austria's March King", the band continued to exist as a private organization into the 21st century. After Austria was annexed to Nazi Germany , the high and German masters were integrated together with the Austrian military music in the imperial German military music with their instruments and the normal mood. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the original Hoch- and Deutschmeister formed again. Among other things, they played on April 27, 1945 at the Vienna Rathausplatz at the Austrian Declaration of Independence and the proclamation of the Second Republic (Austria) by State Chancellor Karl Renner, as well as an acclaimed concert on May 1, 1945 at Schwarzenbergplatz , but without the traditional blue uniform. The old kuk tradition and with it the high mood, the cornetton , were reintroduced. From this time on until Herrmann's death in 1977, numerous recordings were made, including his own Christmas record. During this time, numerous tours were undertaken: Among other things, the band went on three major tours to America from 1958 to 1962 under the motto "Vienna on Parade" and played over 300 sold-out concerts there. The original Hoch- and Deutschmeister made guest appearances at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1960 - even before Ernst Mosch and his Egerländer - as the first German-speaking orchestra. On 3/4. June 1961 the band played at the summit in Vienna , where John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev met . Kennedy wanted the " Kaiserjäger March " from the German champions. Federal Chancellor Dr. Julius Raab honored Julius Herrmann with the silver medal of the Republic of Austria for his great contribution to maintaining the famous music corps and his work as conductor, composer and interpreter of traditional Viennese music. Julius Herrmann was later awarded the title of professor.

Reorganization as a traditional club in 1977

After the unexpected death of Julius Herrmann in the spring of 1977, the regular musicians of the leaderless band around the then music master and flautist Ferdinand Kastner decided that an association should be founded. Previously, the dissolution of the Deutschmeisterkapelle was falsely reported in the media. Music master Ferdinand Kastner led two rehearsals as Kapellmeister before he resigned from this position and played the flute again under the new Kapellmeister of the original Hoch- und Deutschmeisterkapelle Horst Winter . The orchestra was organized by the music manager Wilhelm Breitenfeld (1918–1998), head of the Austrian international artist agency ÖIK. On May 6, 1977, came under the name " Chapel of the K. and K. Infantry Regiment high and German masters No." Original high and German masters. "4 " establishing an association which, under the ZVR 385688411 in the Central Register of registered is. On July 17th, 1977 Horst Winter gave the first concert at Michaelerplatz as the new Kapellmeister. At this concert a true-to-original copy of the regimental flag was solemnly consecrated by Archbishop-Coadjutor Franz Jachym . The original has since been in the Army History Museum in Vienna. During Winter's creative period, there were numerous tours in Europe, such as to Germany , Luxembourg and Switzerland . In addition, the world-famous band played at the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 and recorded several sound carriers. The 250th anniversary of the band and the 300th anniversary of the Hoch- and Deutschmeister were also celebrated during this time. Since 1988, the band has owned the trademark "Hoch- und Deutschmeister" (Hoch- und Deutschmeister), a name that is protected by trademark law for musical services and is now protected from abuse across Europe with the help of an EU trade mark .

Original Hoch- und Deutschmeister in 1977 - Horst Winter is the new Kapellmeister

In 1998, for health reasons, Professor Horst Winter handed over the musical direction to Professor Ottokar Drapal , who had been solo clarinetist with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra for many years and who had been second conductor alongside Horst Winter for a long time. However, he passed away shortly afterwards. Reinhold Nowotny has been leading the band since 1999 . As before, the band plays in the high mood, the Turkish tone , and marches - in contrast to all other bands in Austria - according to old regulations. Since 2010, the original high and German masters have been providing musical entertainment at the Fete Imperiale , the summer ball of the Spanish Riding School .

The original Hoch- and Deutschmeister lived up to their role as a traditional band by organizing a free public concert every Saturday from the end of April to mid-October on the Inner Burgplatz of the Vienna Hofburg . This event, known as “Castle Music”, was a reminder of the changing of the guard, which had been forgotten since the end of the monarchy, and had become a point of attraction for visitors to the city of Vienna. At 10:45 am, the German masters marched in their historical uniforms across the Kohlmarkt and Michaelerplatz into the courtyard and played in the traditional circular constellation, only to march back to Michaelerplatz shortly before 12 noon. For financial reasons, the castle music did not take place in 2017 because it was not possible to find a sponsor.

Special mood and special instruments

The original high and German masters are the last original representatives of the famous Austrian-Hungarian military music in terms of brass music history. While most of the remaining military bands adapted to the internationally used tuning (440 Hz) after the Second World War , the original high and German masters kept the "high tuning", the cornett tone, which was a semitone higher . The Cornettton goes back to the old field and military music, which had to be heard well outdoors and in the marching troupe. Another special feature of the orchestra are the instruments used: E-flat trumpets and valve trombones are still in use, and the traditional helicopter tuba is used instead of the usual bass tuba . The famous Viennese music critic Eduard Hanslick was one of the first to advocate the introduction of the high tuning that would later be characteristic of brass music in military music , which deviates from the internationally customary pitch, since the music had to be audible from afar and the voices had to be taken into account , which is quite appropriate in the theater and opera business, is negligible. In addition, according to Hanslick, the interplay between civil and military bands would not correspond to the actual purpose of military music. He therefore called the high mood a " justified peculiarity ".
