Kohlmarkt (Vienna)
The Kohlmarkt is a shopping street in Vienna's 1st district, Innere Stadt . It stretches from Michaelerplatz to Graben and is considered Vienna's luxury mile due to the high density of jewelers and branches of international fashion labels.
history
The history of the Kohlmarkt goes back to the time of the Roman legionary camp Vindobona , whose southwestern gate, the later Peilertor , could be reached via the Kohlmarkt. In 1255 and 1304 it was mentioned as a Witmarkt , and in 1314 and 1352 for the first time as a coal market . The name can be traced back to its original use as a sales point by charcoal dealers. After the construction of the Hofburg , the proximity of the Kohlmarkt to the imperial residence favored the settlement of producers of high-quality and luxurious goods. The Kohlmarkt has been the visual axis in the direction of Michaelerplatz since the Wilhelminian implementation of the baroque plans for the Michaelertrakt of the castle .
shops
The Kohlmarkt is (or was) the location of many exclusive shops and former imperial and royal court suppliers such as Demel , the tobacco shop Mohilla, the Manz'sche publishing and university bookstore and the cartographic institution Freytag & Berndt (the latter in the Artaria House until April 2014 ). With the end of the monarchy, increasing competition and rising rental prices, many traditional companies were forced to close their shops, such as the chamber watchmaker Franz Morawetz and the order jeweler CF Rothe & Neffe in January 2005. International brands such as Chanel moved in their place or Louis Vuitton . The Kohlmarkt, together with the Graben and Kärntner Strasse, forms the so-called “Golden U” on traditional inner-city shopping streets, which have an upscale offer and are designed as pedestrian zones. With average rent prices of 370 euros per square meter per month (as of 2014), the Kohlmarkt is Austria's most expensive shopping street.
