The Peilertor before 1732

The Peilertor (also Peurertor or Baylertor was) one from the time of Babenberger derived Vienna city gate between carbon market and Tuchlauben , which was eliminated in the 18th century because it hindered the passing traffic.

The city gate in the middle of the south-west facing side wall of the former Vindobona legionary fort was probably based on the porta decumana (south gate) of the camp. Between 1278 and 1326 it was known as the Peurer (Castle) Gate. It was considered the starting point of the Reichsstrasse to Bavaria , hence the name. At the time of the expansion of the Vienna city walls under Leopold V , it fell out of use and was then mainly used as a prison. In 1511 it was rebuilt again. Also on the bird's eye view Jacob Hoefnagel 1609, it is still clearly visible. It was torn down in 1732, and a memorial plaque was attached to its location in 1867, but it was removed again at the end of the 19th century for a new building and was transferred to the depot of the Wien Museum .
