Jacob Hoefnagel

Jacob Hoefnagel (* 1575 in Antwerp , † around 1630 probably in the Netherlands) was a Flemish miniature painter and engraver .

Live and act

The excerpt from Hoefnagel's bird's eye view of Vienna, showing the south side of the ditch, confirms the problem mentioned. The south-facing facades on the north side remain invisible.

Georg Hoefnagel's son created Diversae Insectarum Volatium icones ad vivum accuratissimè depictae per celeberrimum pictorem , published by NI Visscher in Amsterdam (1630), one of the earliest illustrations that dealt only with insects. In 1609, Hoefnagel also created a topographically reasonably accurate view of Vienna. It shows many of the city's landmarks that have since disappeared, such as the Gothic Heiltumstuhl or the Schranne on Hohen Markt . Due to the bird's eye view from the north (i.e. from across the Danube ), which does not correspond to a corresponding contemporary view from the opposite direction, many questions remain open.

Individual evidence

  1. Cf. Th. F. Meysels: Strolling through Alt-Wien (Vienna 1948, p. 141): “Much more concerned with the painterly effect than with clarity, the makers of old cityscapes and bird's-eye views always chose the view from the Danube side, so we are much better informed about the cityscape from the north than about the south side of the old city.
