Gustave-Auguste Ferrié

Gustave-Auguste Ferrié (born November 19, 1868 in Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne , Savoie , † February 16, 1932 in Paris ) was a French electrical engineer and general.

Life

After graduating from the École polytechnique in 1891 , he joined the army and became an officer. In 1899 he and Guglielmo Marconi set up a wireless telegraph connection between England and France.

In 1903 he invented (among others) an electrolytic detector. Its transmission station on the Eiffel Tower was able to extend the range from 400 km to 6,000 km by 1908. He developed mobile transmitters for the military. During the First World War , France produced 10,000 transmitting and receiving units.

In 1919 he was promoted to general. In 1922 he became "inspecteur général de la télégraphie militaire" (inspector general of military telegraphy).

He died of appendicitis in 1932 in the military hospital of Val-de-Grâce at the age of 64. Tied up with his work, he went to the hospital too late.

  • the “Raum Ferrié” on the Eiffel Tower
  • The 2011 final course for military students of the "École nationale supérieure de techniques avancées de Bretagne" (Higher National School for Advanced Techniques in Brittany )
  • The "Musée Ferrié", a military museum in Cesson-Sévigné (near Rennes ), in which the development of telecommunications technology is exhibited.
  • There is also a memorial on the Eiffel Tower, in front of which a memorial ceremony is held every November by members of the army.
  • The “Général Ferrié” award is given for research in the field of telecommunications .
