Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne is a commune with 2,461 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Savoie department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located near the Franco- Italian border and is a member and seat of the Maurienne-Galibier community association .

The commune is located in the Maurienne between the Col du Galibier and the Col des Encombres in the valley of the Arc River . Well-known ski areas such as Valloire , Valmeinier (domaine Galibier-Thabor), Orelle and Trois Vallées are nearby .

Railway accident of 1917
On 12./13. December 1917 occurred near Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne one of the most momentous railway accidents worldwide and by far the most serious accident in French railway history, when a military train manned by almost 1000 French soldiers on the Culoz-Modane railway went downhill and out of control derailed at excessive speed.
