Fourneaux is a French municipality with 676 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The inhabitants are called Forniolins.
geography
The municipality is located on the Arc River on the edge of the Vanoise National Park , 2 kilometers southwest of Modane .
history
During excavations, tools from the Neolithic period were found, which testify that the area around Fourneaux was already inhabited in prehistoric times.
In the 18th century the parish belonged to the Vicomté (dominion of a Viscount) Maurienne .
Fourneau is the French word for "kiln", fourneaux is the plural of it. The place name means that there were kilns for metal processing on site.

There is a city partnership with Bardonecchia in Italy .

Entrance to the Fréjus tunnel built in 1870. The tunnel is entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques (historical monuments).
