It belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and the canton of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (until 2015: canton of La Chambre ). The inhabitants are called Cuinains .

Saint-Étienne-de-Cuines is located about 38 kilometers southeast of Chambéry and about 47 kilometers east-northeast of Grenoble on the Arc , which delimits the municipality in the northeast, and on the Glandon , which forms the southeast border. Saint-Étienne-de-Cuines is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Saint-Rémy-de-Maurienne in the north and northwest, La Chambre in the east and northeast, Saint-Avre in the east, Sainte-Marie-de-Cuines in the south and east, Saint -Alban-des-Villards in the south and south-west, Allevard in the west and Arvillard in the north-west.
The A43 autoroute runs along the eastern edge of the municipality .
