Modane ( ital. Modana ) is a French municipality with 3097 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Modane is known for the winter sports resort Valfréjus .
geography
The municipality is located on the Arc River , which formed the Maurienne valley . It is the last place before the Mont Cenis tunnels for rail and road traffic and is a few kilometers before the ascent to the Mont Cenis pass , which, like the tunnels, leads to Italy.
history
In the Middle Ages, Modane belonged to the county of Savoy , which became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1720 . On March 24, 1860, Savoy, and with it Modane, was ceded to France.
The construction of the Mont-Cenis-Tunnel railway tunnel ( Tunnels du Mont Cenis or Tunnels du Fréjus ) from 1857 to 1871, the northern portal of which is in Modane, has had a strong impact on the place and has increased the population. During the construction period, around 800 workers were quartered in the village, which at that time had 1,203 inhabitants (1860). In 1901 the population had increased to 2,603 inhabitants.
When the construction of the Mont Cenis road tunnel began in 1968, the community had 5,500 inhabitants. The tunnel was opened in 1980.
forestry
In the center of the village there was a paved area made accessible with a Decauville railway for drying stone pine cones around 1892 . The seeds, known colloquially as stone pine nuts , were used to produce food and spirits such as stone pine liqueur and stone pine schnapps .
traffic
Modane is located on the Mont-Cenis railway and is the border station for rail traffic between Italy and France. The TGV Paris - Milan , which runs three times a day, stops here . In Modane, next to the railway tunnel, there is the south portal of the Mont Cenis road tunnel at the end of the A43 autoroute . It leads in the tunnel as the N 566 to the border and there as the Italian T 4 ( Traforo 4 ) to the start of the A32 autostrada to Turin.
