Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane , better known under the English name Modane Underground Laboratory , is an underground experimental station for experiments in particle physics.

It branches off the Mont Cenis tunnel between Modane and Bardonecchia on the Franco-Italian border. As a result, its shielding corresponds to that of 4800 m of water, the usual measure for assessing the shielding against cosmic radiation . This is reduced to a millionth.

The most important experiments in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane are EDELWEISS , to search for WIMPs , the hypothetical particles of dark matter and NEMO , to search for neutrino-free double beta decay , a review of the standard model of elementary particle physics.

The Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, like the three other European underground laboratories Laboratori nazionali del Gran Sasso , Laboratorio subterráneo de Canfranc and Boulby Underground Laboratory , is part of the ILIAS coordination group.
