Boulby Underground Laboratory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Boulby Underground Laboratory is an underground experimental station for experiments in particle physics.

It is located near Whitby in the Boulby Mine , the deepest mine in England.

The laboratory is 1,100 m below the ground, which corresponds to the shielding of 3,000 m of water against the disturbing cosmic radiation .

In the laboratory, two different detectors are used to search for WIMPs , the hypothetical components of dark matter , ZEPLIN and DRIFT .

The Boulby Underground Laboratory, like the three other European underground laboratories, Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane , Laboratorio subterráneo de Canfranc and Laboratori nazionali del Gran Sasso, is part of the ILIAS coordination group.
