The European metropolitan region of Stuttgart  - not to be confused with the Stuttgart region  - is one of currently eleven metropolitan regions in Germany . It was established as such by the German Ministerial Conference for Spatial Planning (MKRO) in 1995. There are different spatial delimitations of the metropolitan region.

Around 5.3 million people live in the largest design, which is referred to as the cooperation area of the Stuttgart metropolitan region . It includes the regions of Stuttgart , Heilbronn-Franconia , Northern Black Forest , East Wuerttemberg and Neckar-Alb and has an area of 15,400 km².

After the 2002 state development plan for Baden-Württemberg was updated, the delimitation of the Stuttgart metropolitan region is deliberately left out of focus, but is based on the area in Baden-Württemberg previously known as the Stuttgart metropolitan area . This includes almost all municipalities in the Stuttgart region , as well as the two regional centers Heilbronn in the north and Tübingen / Reutlingen in the south, the central center Schwäbisch Gmünd in the east and the eastern edge of the northern Black Forest region in the west as well as the densification areas between these parts. About 3.5 million people live in this area. According to the State Development Plan 2002, the minimum extent corresponds to the agglomeration with its peripheral zone. In addition, the state development plan 2002 gives the task of working towards the future allocation of the rural conurbation Albstadt / Balingen / Hechingen to the metropolitan region of Stuttgart.
