Songs in A Minor (dt .: "Songs in A Minor ") is the debut album of American R & B singer Alicia Keys . It was released on June 5th in the US and on September 3rd, 2001 in Europe under J Records . At the presentation of the Grammy Awards in 2002 , the album won five Grammy Awards .

The style of the album is a mixture of different stylistic elements. This includes the use of the Motown style, i.e. the piano , the string arrangements and the choir entries, in conjunction with modern R&B. The influence of Clive Davis who discovered Alicia Keys can be heard on the album , according to Rolling Stone .

In addition to the standard version of the album, a special edition has been released. This limited edition also includes a second CD with remixes and unplugged live recordings.

Song information

  • The song Butterflyz was the first piece written by Keys. She was 14 years old at the time.
  • How Come You Don't Call Me is a cover version of Prince's song How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? , B-side of the 1999 single from 1982.
  • The video for Fallin ' , directed by Chris Robinson , shows Alicia Keys in various situations in which she sings the song and sometimes plays the piano. In the intro you can see her playing on a piano in an apartment, then she sings on the street. A continuous storyline is a visit to a prison. The journey by bus, arrival and a conversation with an inmate are shown. On the way to the prison, the bus drives past a field where female prisoners work and sing along to the song.

Single releases

The four singles Fallin ' , A Woman's Worth , How Come You Don't Call Me and Girlfriend were released from this album . Her debut single Fallin was the album's most successful single , reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks.

Her fourth single Girlfriend was only released in parts of Europe , Canada and Australia . It did not appear in the United States .

Awards

Alicia Keys won the Grammy in the categories Song of the Year , Best female R&B vocal performance and Best R&B song with the single Fallin ' from this album . The album also received a Grammy in the Best R&B album category. In addition, Alicia Keys was honored as best new artist .
