Creation and publication
Alicia Keys worked on this song all by herself, wrote it, produced it, recorded the song. The accompanying music video was shot under the direction of Diane Martel . It was shot in Manhattan , New York City . The rapper Method Man plays Keys' friend in the video.
The single was released in February 2004 as the second single on the album and quickly reached fourth place on the American Billboard Hot 100 . It became Keys' second number one hit on the R&B and hip-hop charts, where it was at the top for six weeks. The song reached third place on the American annual chart in 2004 and was the third highest-grossing single of the year in the United States. The song stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for a total of 40 weeks and is Keys' longest-running single; it was the first single by a female artist to stay on the hot R & B / hip-hop charts for over a year.
The song won a Grammy at the 2005 Grammy Awards and was nominated in two categories.
There are three remix versions of the song, one with Usher , a radio mix with Kanye West and a Spanish-language version with Arturo Sandoval , which is included as a bonus song on The Diary of Alicia Keys .
On the cover picture for the single you can see keys against a brown background. You can see her back, she wears no top and she wears a turban on her head. The cover image is a re-enactment of Man Ray 's Le Violon d'Ingres from 1924.
Commercial win
The song reached third place on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 3, 2004 . It stayed on the US charts for a total of 46 weeks and is Keys' longest-standing single to date. In the Hot R & B / Hip-Hop charts, the single reached the top of the charts on May 1, 2004 and stayed there for six weeks. It became the first single by a female artist to stay in the local charts for over a year, a total of 56 weeks. The single reached ninth place on the US pop charts. In the UK , the single reached the top twenty at number 18.
