The Soul Train Music Awards have been held annually since 1987 and are broadcast nationwide on television and radio in the United States. The prizes are specially awarded for African American music and entertainment. The award is produced by the former producers of Soul Train , a former television show for African American music, which was also broadcast nationwide from 1971 to 2009, around Don Cornelius .

The jury consists of music journalists and other related professions as well as artists who have already received the award themselves. The show is moderated by changing moderators, such as Luther Vandross , Patti LaBelle , Will Smith , Vanessa Williams , and Gladys Knight .

Beyoncé holds the record for most Soul Train Awards. She lies in front of Janet Jackson , her brother Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston .

Due to the writers' strike in Hollywood , the award ceremony was canceled in 2008. The award ceremony on November 29, 2009 was moderated by Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard and broadcast in parallel on two television channels.

The namesake of the award is the 45-48 minute long TV series on US television with mainly African American music under the title Soul Train , which first aired on October 2, 1971 once a week and was discontinued on December 18, 2009.
