Grafenberg is a municipality about 11 km northeast of Reutlingen in the Reutlingen district . It belongs to the Neckar-Alb region and the European metropolitan region of Stuttgart . Apart from the village of the same name, Grafenberg does not include any other localities.

history
Early history
Archaeological traces point to people of the Michelsberg culture and thus to a first settlement during the Neolithic around 3,500 BC. Chr. Around 500 BC The Celts settled in the area around the town . During the time of the tribal duchies, today's municipal area was in the Duchy of Swabia . Grafenberg was first mentioned in 1246 in a letter from the pastor to Pope Innocent IV . At that time the Counts of Urach had the rulership rights in the place, which they gradually sold to the Counts of Württemberg.
Administrative affiliation
The place belonged first to the Oberamt Nürtingen and then until 1973 to the district of Nürtingen . After its dissolution in the course of the district reform , Grafenberg was the only municipality not to be part of the Esslingen district , but to the Reutlingen district .

Religions
Since the introduction of the Reformation in Württemberg , Grafenberg has also been evangelical-Lutheran. Even today there is only one Protestant parish in the village , which belongs to the Bad Urach-Münsingen church district of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg . The Catholic Christians are assigned to the parish of St. Bonifatius in Metzingen. About 62 percent of the population are Evangelical Lutheran , 20 percent Roman Catholic and the remaining 18 percent belong to other or no religious community.

Buildings
- Evangelical Michaelskirche : It was first mentioned in 1246. It is a hall church with a west tower, the core of which is still Romanesque. In 1726 there was a fundamental renovation and expansion. The most recent redesign took place in 1956/1957 under the architect Manfred Wizgall , whereby a chancel and a sacristy were added. The Stuttgart glass artist Adolf Valentin Saile created the colored window in the new chancel with the theme of the Second Coming of Christ.

In Grafenberg itself there is a pure elementary school. The Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium are mainly attended in Metzingen. Grafenberg has three kindergartens.
