Johannes Schenck von Grafenberg
Johannes Schenck von Grafenberg , also Johann Schenck von Grafenberg ( Latin: Ioannes Schenckius ; born June 10, 1531 in Grafenberg in Württemberg near Nürtingen ; † November 12, 1598 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German doctor and one of the pioneers of neurolinguistics .
life and work
Johannes Schenck studied at the University of Würzburg with Jakob Degen and Leonhart Fuchs and received his doctorate in 1554 . He then worked briefly as a resident doctor in Strasbourg , and soon afterwards as a city doctor in Freiburg im Breisgau. His studies on language disorders caused by neurotrauma were considered trend-setting in the 16th century. In 1584 he used artificial ventilation for the first time . In the same year he published his personal and the observations of colleagues on speech disorders in the treatise Observationes medicae de capite humano . His best-known work is the seven-volume compendium Observationes medicarum rararum with descriptions of pathological symptoms on the entire human body. It also includes a description of the cleft bladder that Schenck von Grafenberg first described in 1597. In Freiburg, the Schenkstrasse is named after him.
His son Johann Georg Schenck von Grafenberg was also a doctor.
