history
Until the 19th century
According to a document from 1275, the name Wannweil comes from the term Wyle bi Betzingen . The name Wannwyle did not appear until 1465 .
In 1333 Albrecht von Blankenstein sold the "Widdumhof" (residential courtyard) including the patronage rights of the Wannweiler Church to the hospital in Reutlingen. So Wannweil was largely owned by Reutlingen and from then on shared all the fortunes of the free imperial city. Bad times for the community were the wars of 1449/50 and the so-called “Prince's War” in 1519, when Duke Ulrich von Württemberg besieged and conquered Reutlingen. The participation of the imperial city in the Schmalkaldic War of 1546/47 led imperial armies to Wannweil. During the Thirty Years War, Croatians invaded the village in 1638 after the Battle of Nördlingen, in 1642 the Swedes and later the French came.
In 1802/03, Wannweil and the city of Reutlingen fell to the Electorate and, from 1806, the Kingdom of Württemberg , in which it belonged to the Reutlingen Oberamt . At that time the place had 405 inhabitants. During the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Wannweil came to the Reutlingen district in 1938 . In 1945 the place became part of the French occupation zone and thus came to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern , which was incorporated into the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

Culture and sights
Buildings
The Evangelical Johanneskirche is probably one of the oldest churches in Württemberg, built in the 11th or 12th century, with Christ bronze by Ernst Yelin (1958). In the south wall of the church there is a copy of a pre-Romanesque stone (visible side: 150 × 45 cm), which connects the pagan symbols (dragons) with the Christian symbols (cross) in its decorations. Originally the stone had the function of a door lintel. On the front there is a rectangular field in the middle that contains an inscription that is no longer legible. There is a circle on the left. This is divided into eight equal parts by four lines. At their intersection there was a stick as a pointer, which turned the circle into a sundial. The dashes on the vertical and horizontal lines also indicate such a function. In this way, the times of the Liturgy of the Hours were marked on canonial sundials. The rectangle is framed by four snake-like beings, whose bodies are intertwined. The original has been in the Württemberg State Museum since a church renovation.
