Großbettlingen is a municipality in the Esslingen district in the state of Baden-Württemberg , around five kilometers from Nürtingen and six kilometers from Metzingen . It belongs to the Stuttgart region (until 1992 the Middle Neckar region ) and the European metropolitan region of Stuttgart .

Geographical location
Großbettlingen is located in the Erms-Steinach-Albvorland, as the crow flies about four kilometers southwest of Nürtingen and about 17 km south of the district town of Esslingen am Neckar , and is traversed from southeast to northwest by the Autmut , to the right of which the village is on the slope. The municipality extends from about 300 m above sea level. NN at the outflow of the Autmut up to a height of over 400 m above sea level. NN on the top of the Geigersbühl, around which the settlement areas are located from southeast to southwest to northwest. A few small tributaries run towards the river in the municipality, including the Baumbach which is emerging near the southern edge of the village.
Neighboring communities
Großbettlingen is bordered by the city of Nürtingen in the north, northeast and east, the municipality of Frickenhausen only briefly in the southeast, the municipality of Grafenberg in the south, the municipality of Bempflingen in the southwest and the municipality of Altdorf in the west. With the exception of Grafenberg, which is in the Reutlingen district , all the others belong to the Esslingen district .

Apart from the village of Großbettlingen, no other places belong to Großbettlingen. The abandoned village of Stetten lies on the territory of the municipality .

history
Großbettlingen was first documented in 1356 when it was mentioned in maiori Betlingen . Earlier mentions (around 1120) in connection with the monasteries in Zwiefalten and Hirsau as well as in connection with the Lords of Boihingen as landowners (around 1140) are uncertain, as they can also refer to small bed people. At that time Großbettlingen was subordinate to the Counts of Urach and came to Württemberg at the end of the 13th century , to which it belonged until the state of Baden-Württemberg was formed in 1952.
The community had belonged to the then newly formed district of Nürtingen since 1938 . In the course of the district reform in 1973 it went up with this in the Esslingen district .
Religions
Großbettlingen has been evangelical since the Reformation at the beginning of the 16th century . It was only after the Second World War that the influx of people who had been expelled from their homeland that there was again a significant number of Roman Catholic Christians who were given their own church in 1968. Since 1948 there has also been an independent New Apostolic congregation in the village.

Martin Fritz has been the mayor since 1981, he was re-elected in 1988, 1996, 2004 and 2012.

Blazon : "In silver (white) on a green shield base, a large one between two small green linden trees."
The three-lime tree motif, which has been traceable in Siegeln since 1694, is today associated with the three linden trees on the Geigersbühl, which Mörike immortalized in literature. The municipal coat of arms was awarded in 1952 by the state government.
The municipal flag has the colors green-white (green-silver). The flag colors were awarded in 1968 by the Ministry of the Interior.
Economy and Infrastructure
Established branches of the local economy are tool technology, electronic and digital control technology, the solar industry and model plant construction. The Hotel UNO 1 , built in 1993, was originally conceived as the first designer and artist hotel in Germany.
education
Großbettlingen has a primary school , the tradition of which goes back to a school first mentioned in 1600. There are also two municipal and one Roman Catholic kindergarten.
Supply and disposal
The power grid in the community is operated by EnBW Regional AG. The natural gas network is operated by FairEnergie GmbH , a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Reutlingen GmbH and EnBW Kommunale Beteiligungen GmbH.
The community is a member of the Filderwasserversorgung association . Großbettlingen was the first municipality to transfer the management of the local drinking water supply to the Filderwasserversorgung. The pumping of own water in the Autmuttal was stopped years ago and the pumping station was taken out of service.
A sewage treatment plant is operated to purify the wastewater.
The waste management company of the Esslingen district is responsible for waste disposal. There are separate collections for organic waste , household waste and paper. As part of the Green Dot, packaging is collected in so-called yellow bags . Bulky waste can be picked up free of charge by handing in one of two vouchers a year, or it can be taken to a disposal station. Electrical and metal scrap and other recyclable materials can also be disposed of at the disposal stations.
Culture and sights
Culture
Many associations are located in Großbettlingen. These include: gymnastics, sports and singing clubs, harmonica clubs, music clubs, rifle clubs, garden friends, Swabian Alb club, tennis club and the nursing club.
The local library of the community and the former tithe barn are located near the Großbettlingen town hall . This is mainly used for lectures, music lessons and VHS courses .
The "bettlinger forum" in Großbettlingen originally consists of the "culture forum", "sport forum" and the "aqua forum". The Forum of Generations was opened in Großbettlingen on September 9, 2017. The "aqua forum", which was used as an indoor swimming pool, was converted into a building with several rooms for the community. The Forum of Generations creates space for the voluntary activities in the community to bring people of all ages together. An exercise course was laid out in the exterior of the building.
Attractions
The town hall, built in 1812, is particularly worth seeing.
