history

Denkendorf 1683/1685 in the Kieser forest inventory book
Denkendorf Monastery

Celtic archaeological finds show that the municipality was already before the year 700 BC. Was settled. Denkendorf was first mentioned in a document in 1129 in which Pope Honorius II took the Denkendorf monastery under his protection. The place should have existed a long time before. When the Reichsautobahn (today's A8 autobahn) was built in 1935, an Alemannic row grave field was uncovered that was dated to shortly before 700 AD.

In the High Middle Ages, Denkendorf was within the domain of the Duchy of Swabia . From the late Middle Ages to the Reformation, local history was shaped by the rule of the Denkendorf monastery. With the dissolution of the monastery in the time of the Reformation Denkendorf, together with the neighboring villages Altdorf and Berkheim the now- Württemberg assumed monastery District. During the Thirty Years' War, Denkendorf also suffered brutal looting and destruction between 1634 and 1639 after the battle of Nördlingen that Württemberg had lost . Denkendorf housed a Protestant monastery school up to 1584 and again from 1713 to 1810. The place came to the Oberamt Esslingen in 1808 when the new administrative structure in the Kingdom of Württemberg was implemented . During the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , the community came to the Esslingen district in 1938. After the Second World War, the place became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was merged into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

In the district and community reform of 1973/74, Denkendorf was able to keep its independence unchanged.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows the double cross of the Patriarchs of Jerusalem in gold as well as two golden Ds to the left and right of it, all on a blue background.

Town twinning

The town partnership with Meximieux in France (near Lyon) has existed since September 27, 1986 and is actively maintained. There are joint summer camps, annual festivals, sports clubs organize tournaments and student exchanges are offered in the Denkendorf secondary school and in the Nellingen grammar schools.

Religions

With the introduction of the Reformation in 1535, Denkendorf became Protestant . The Denkendorf Monastery was converted into a Protestant monastery school. Since 1972 it has housed an evangelical training center. In addition to the Protestant parish, there is also a local group each of the South German Community , the Hahn Community and the Old Pietist Community , all of which also belong to the Association of the Evangelical Regional Church .

A Roman Catholic church has only existed in Denkendorf since 1961.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

From 1926 to 1978, Denkendorf was connected by rail to the district town of Esslingen am Neckar by the Esslingen – Nellingen – Denkendorf tram . The connection with Nellingen and Esslingen is made today by the bus route 119 of the END Verkehrsgesellschaft . In Nellingen there is also a connection to the U7 and U8 lines of the Stuttgart Stadtbahn , they both end there.

The federal highway 10 can be reached in a few minutes via the Körschtal or the Nellingen bypass and connects Denkendorf with Stuttgart , Esslingen, Plochingen and Göppingen . The federal motorway 8 passes south of the town. It connects Stuttgart with Munich and Karlsruhe . The two closest junctions are in the east of Wendlingen (just under 10 minutes) and in the west of Neuhausen (5 minutes). The Sulzbach Viaduct is located in the municipality and leads the motorway over the eponymous river. The Stuttgart Airport can be reached in less than 15 minutes.

The new Stuttgart – Wendlingen line planned as part of the Stuttgart 21 project is to run in the area of Denkendorf in a bundle of traffic routes with the motorway, including the Denkendorf tunnel and the Sulzbachtal railway overpass .

Exposure to traffic noise

The downside of the very good transport connections are greatly increased noise emissions to which the place is exposed. The A8 motorway in the south of the district ensures constant sound around the clock. The noise protection structures along the motorway, which have been improved several times , only provided temporary relief; the effects were caught up again by the constant increase in traffic. All attempts to bring about a speed limit in this section of the A8 have so far failed. After the construction of the new Stuttgart-Wendlingen line along the motorway, the overall noise pollution will presumably continue to increase.

The approach lane for Stuttgart Airport runs along the northern boundary of the town and causes considerable aircraft noise from the other side . The altitude of the aircraft in the Denkendorf area is only a few hundred meters.

Established businesses

Well-known companies in Denkendorf are:

  • Object Carpet , global carpet manufacturer

  • Festo Didactic . The subsidiary of the automation company Festo offers, among other things, solutions for training across the entire spectrum of production and process automation.

With the Albert Schweitzer School, Denkendorf has a primary and secondary school . There is also a pure elementary school with the Ludwig-Uhland-Schule. In the neighboring municipality of Ostfildern there are further elementary schools and two grammar schools , the Otto Hahn grammar school and the Heinrich Heine grammar school. The school body of the two high schools is the Gymnasiale Schulverband Ostfildern, a municipal association of the communities of Denkendorf and Neuhausen and the city of Ostfildern. The profiles of both grammar schools hardly differ in terms of their linguistic and scientific orientation.

There are six Protestant and one Roman Catholic kindergarten in town.

Waste disposal

The waste management company of the Esslingen district is responsible for waste disposal. There are separate collections for organic waste , household waste and paper. As part of the Green Dot, packaging is collected in so-called yellow bags . Bulky waste can be picked up free of charge by handing in one of two vouchers a year, or it can be taken to a disposal station. Electrical and metal scrap and other recyclable materials can also be disposed of at the disposal stations.

Buildings

The buildings of the Denkendorf Monastery , consisting of the monastery church, the convent building, the tithe barn and the former official building (today the rectory), as well as the Maierhof below the monastery, are characteristic of the site. The entire ensemble of buildings is a listed building. The monastery church is used as a local Protestant church, the converted tithe barn as a community room. From 1950 to 2005, a training center for the Evangelical Church in Württemberg was located in the convent building . After the training center was closed, the regional church tried to sell the buildings of the training center that were no longer needed because of austerity. However, no interested party could be found.

Sports

Denkendorf has a soccer and athletics stadium, several soccer and football fields, a tennis court with outdoor and indoor fields, a multifunctional sports hall and smaller sports facilities such as a skate park, a boules pitch and another small sports hall near the town center. Denkendorf also has a spacious outdoor pool , attractively located in the Körschtal . The club structure is very diverse. In addition to popular sports clubs, there are also various niche offers (e.g. billiards or bowling).
