Name interpretation
The name Sleit village on the one hand interpreted as slippery (clay), the Old German name book by Ernst Förstemann but looks sleit than mountainside.
history
Until the 19th century
In the area there is a Celtic barrow (burial mound in Lehbühl) of the Hallstatt culture from the time from 600 to 400 BC. This plundered grave is assigned a significance similar to that of the barrow of Hochdorf an der Enz .
Based on the name, research on place names allows the origin of Schlaitdorf to be dated between 500 and 700 AD.
Schlaitdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1088. This first mention by name can be found in the donation book of the Reichenbach monastery and it does not refer to Schlaitdorf per se , but to his master, Albericus de Sleithdorf , who acted as a witness at a donation.
In 1342, Schlaitdorf was given to Count Ulrich III by the Count Palatine of Tübingen, along with the city of Tübingen and other places . sold by Württemberg . With Burchart the "Frien" of Schlaitdorf 1344 is the last time reported about the Schlaitdorf local nobility. Until the beginning of the 15th century, not much is known about Schlaitdorf. Obviously, however, the place seems to be owned by the Kaib von Hohenstein family; they had already had income from Schlaitdorf since 1334. In 1436 Kaib sold the local rule to the nobleman Georg Dürner von Dürnau (headquarters in the Göppingen district). The latter gave the village to the Count of Württemberg as a fiefdom, but in 1451 had his fiefdoms at Schlaitdorf suitable again. For this he removes his lordly rights from Count Ulrich von Württemberg. Georg Dürner sold his property through exchange and purchase to citizens of Nürtingen and the rule of Württemberg.
In 1482 the castle, then located in Schlaitdorf, was handed over to the pastor at the time by the last known lord of the castle, Ludwig Haffenberg zu Neuenriet, and since then it has been used as a parsonage and has been rebuilt several times. Today only remains of the original castle are left on the ground floor of the rectory. Around 1500, today's part of the local church of Sankt Wendelin was built in the late Gothic style; parts of the nave could go back to the 12th century. In 1534, during the Reformation , Schlaitdorf became Protestant. Altenriet, which had fallen out with Neckartenzlingen and until 1842 also Häslach , belonged to the parish of Schlaitdorf since 1654 .
In the period from 1842 to 1863, stone sandstone was extracted in (long since closed) quarries; it was used, among other things, for the construction of Cologne Cathedral and Ulm Minster . Due to its high proportion of calcite, it is particularly sensitive to acid and therefore weathers quickly. The stones from Schlaitdorf therefore had to be replaced later. Two former quarries are now natural monuments.
20th century
In 1935 the coat of arms , which is still valid today, was awarded, it shows in the upper part ( shield head ) a deer pole on a gold background and below it a red heart on a white background. Originally the old coat of arms showed a plow iron instead of a heart , but the plow iron was mistakenly interpreted as a heart and therefore the coat of arms was changed.
From 1938 on, Schlaitdorf belonged to the Nürtingen district , with which it was opened in the Esslingen district in 1973.
During the Second World War , Schlaitdorf was hit by several incendiary bombs , which destroyed some buildings. 21 Schlaitdorfers died in World War I, 26 fell and 15 went missing in World War II.
