geography

course

The Schaich rises at about 544  m above sea level. NHN the stallion fountain in the forest south of Altdorf, a little east of the fork oak at the Rauhen Hau. Your source area is in the north of the 582.6  m above sea level. NHN high Bromberg .

From there, the Schaich flows in a predominantly eastward direction through or on the edge of the areas of the municipalities of Altdorf, Holzgerlingen , Weil im Schönbuch , Dettenhausen , Walddorfhäslach , Aichtal and Schlaitdorf . At the end of the Neuenhaus district of Aichtal, it flows at 315.9  m above sea level. NHN from the right and finally southwest into the Aich .

At the end of its 23.6 km long path with an average bed gradient of 9.7 ‰, it flows about 228 meters below its source.

The Schaich flows mainly in an easterly direction through the Schönbuch natural area , a mountainous forest area in the southern German Keuper Hills . It rises on the northern edge of the sub-area Südlicher Schönbuch , then moves on the southern edge of the Holzgerlinger Platte , the lower course crosses the sub-area Nördlicher Schönbuch .

It initially runs roughly on the northern edge of the Schönbuch Nature Park, which is not congruent with the natural area, and later through its northeastern part.

Catchment area

The Schaich drains an area of 38.1 km² that is entirely in the Schönbuch natural area. Its highest point is the flat, 582.6  m above sea level. NHN high summit of the Bromberg south of the Hengstbrunnen, over which the southern watershed runs to the large catchment area of the Goldersbach and its tributaries, which drains over the Ammer to the Neckar . In turn, further to the east, the catchment area of the Reichenbach , which flows into the Neckar at Pliezhausen, borders in the south , then on this side the continuously shorter Neckar tributaries.

On the north side only short tributaries compete from the mouth upwards beyond the Betzenberg to the Aich receiving the Schaich , in the area of the upper course then its tributary Seitenbach, which is partly very close and also approximately eastward, competing . To the north of the immediate source area of the Schaich, the Altdorfer Würm rises just a kilometer away , a source branch of the Würm , which drains into the Neckar via the Nagold and Enz rivers much further down than the Aich. The watershed, which is less prominent on this section than towards the south, is therefore hydrologically the most important.

Schaichtal nature reserve

The Schaichtal is one of the most natural flowing water landscapes in the greater Stuttgart area. Since February 23, 1995, the valley area between Dettenhausen and Neuenhaus is around 8 km long, including the flanks of Betzenberg, Eichenfirst and Schaichberg, as the Schaichtal nature reserve (NSG number 1.210). The 467.8 hectare area extends over the districts of Reutlingen, Tübingen and Esslingen.

A species of snail was found here, the bellied diaper snail (Vertigo moulisiana), which was considered lost in Württemberg and has only been found alive here until now. Lush bank vegetation as well as lakes and ponds characterize the scenic valley, which is home to rare species such as kingfisher , fire salamander and dipper .

Schaichtal retention basin

In 1984 the Aich water association planned to damm the Schaich with a 17 m high dam. The citizens' initiative "Save the Schaichtal" prevented this.

Biking and hiking trails

Some cycling and hiking trails, such as the Hohenzollern cycle path , lead through the Schaichtal.
